NATO to expand defense cooperation to Indo-Pacific

Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand are attending NATO’s 75th anniversary summit in Washington. China’s growing military strength and territorial ambitions, as well as its growing closeness to Russia, have prompted them to strengthen their ties with the alliance.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg spoke with DW’s Brussels bureau chief, Alexandra von Nahmen, about the threat posed by Russia, NATO support for Ukraine and why what’s happening in the Middle East “doesn’t excuse a Russian invasion of Ukraine.”

NATO’s Steadfast Defender 2024 is the largest military exercise in Europe since the Cold War. It involves naval, air and ground maneuvers across much of Europe.
