Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force scrambled jets 704 times in fiscal 2024 for foreign aircraft, the Ministry of Defense said Thursday, with the figure rising as China steps up drone and other activity in the region.

China was responsible for the most scrambles at 464, followed by Russia’s 237, in a dynamic that has held for the past decade. The overall tally was up from 669 in fiscal 2023.
