China promises to “resist” the new threat of a 50%  tariff

China has called the US a “bully” as Trump threatened to slap an additional 50% tariff on its biggest economic rival. Beijing has promised countermeasures but urges Washington to engage in dialogue.

China has strongly condemned the United States’ threat to impose a new 50% tariff on key Chinese imports, vowing to take “necessary measures to firmly defend its legitimate rights and interests.” The stern warning comes after reports surfaced that the Biden administration is considering significantly raising tariffs on goods deemed strategically important to the U.S., including semiconductors, electric vehicles (EVs), and solar panels.

Speaking at a press conference earlier today, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce accused the U.S. of engaging in “economic coercion” and protectionism, arguing that the proposed tariffs would disrupt global supply chains and harm consumers in both countries.

“This is a blatant violation of WTO rules,” the spokesperson stated. “The U.S. is abusing trade remedies and politicizing economic and trade issues. Such actions are not conducive to resolving trade disputes and will only lead to a lose-lose situation.”

The move, if implemented, would significantly escalate tensions between the world’s two largest economies. While the Biden administration has yet to officially announce the tariffs, sources familiar with the matter indicate that they are under serious consideration as part of a broader strategy to bolster domestic manufacturing and reduce reliance on China in key sectors.

The proposed tariffs are particularly focused on strategic industries such as semiconductors, where the U.S. is aiming to rebuild its domestic production capacity, and EVs and solar panels, where China currently dominates the global market. Washington argues that these tariffs are necessary to level the playing field and protect American jobs.

China’s response hints at potential retaliatory measures, although the specific nature of these measures remains unclear. Analysts speculate that Beijing could target U.S. exports such as agricultural products, aircraft, or other key commodities.

“China will closely monitor the situation and take all necessary measures to firmly defend its legitimate rights and interests,” the Ministry of Commerce spokesperson reiterated. “We urge the U.S. to abide by WTO rules, cancel these discriminatory measures, and work with China to maintain the stability of the global trade order.”

The escalating trade tensions are already sending ripples through global markets, with investors nervously anticipating further developments and the potential for a full-blown trade war. The outcome of this dispute will have significant implications for businesses, consumers, and the global economy as a whole. Analysts are urging both sides to engage in constructive dialogue to find a mutually acceptable solution and avoid further escalation.
