A prominent Taiwanese opposition lawmaker and former navy chief has brushed off fears that Chinese military drills could suddenly morph into an invasion, while making a case that Taipei needs a broad national security strategy law with oversight by the legislature.
China’s recent military drills surrounding Taiwan are “propaganda,” Chen Yeong-kang, a retired admiral who is now a legislator for the Kuomintang (KMT), argued at a recent Taiwan Foreign Correspondents’ Club briefing. “It’s not possible” for Beijing to simply change the drills to a full-scale invasion, which would entail a “totally different” set of operations including follow-on support and amphibious attacks, Chen said.
