South Korean lawmakers submit impeachment motion against Yoon

Opposition lawmakers in South Korea on Wednesday submitted a motion to the National Assembly to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol, as pressure mounts on the country’s leader over his brief declaration of martial law the day before.

A total of 191 members of the legislature made the submission, according to the body’s secretariat. It should be debated and voted on within 72 hours of being reported to a plenary session, the secretariat said. Passage requires support from two-thirds of the 300 members of the legislature, meaning at least 200 of them must vote in favor for Yoon to be removed from office.
