The U.S. military has concluded its support to the search and rescue efforts for the missing soccer team and their coach in Thailand, according to a statement from the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. The 12 boys and their coach were successfully rescued from the flooded Tham Luang cave complex in a dramatic and complex international operation that spanned over two weeks. The U.S. provided critical assistance in the form of personnel, equipment, and expertise from various branches of the military, including U.S. Navy SEALs and Air Force pararescuemen. The operation involved diving teams, medical support, and specialized equipment, such as sonar and water pumps, to aid in the location and extraction of the trapped individuals.

The rescue mission began on June 23 when the group went missing and was discovered by British divers on July 2. The U.S. military’s involvement grew as the situation evolved, with the arrival of the 36th Rescue Squadron from California and an elite contingent of U.S. Air Force personnel who specialize in confined space and underwater operations. They joined a multinational effort that included experts from the United Kingdom, Australia, China, and other countries.

The U.S. military’s support was crucial in various aspects of the operation. They assisted with the initial assessment of the cave conditions, helped plan the rescue strategy, and provided key equipment such as a small, flexible drone that could navigate the narrow cave passageways to assess potential escape routes. The U.S. military also offered medical and logistical support to the rescue teams on the ground.

In a display of international cooperation, the U.S. military worked closely with the Royal Thai Navy SEALs, who played a pivotal role in the rescue. The U.S. contingent praised the professionalism and dedication of their Thai counterparts and expressed their deep respect for the sacrifices made, particularly that of former Thai Navy SEAL Saman Gunan, who lost his life while delivering supplies to the trapped group.

The successful rescue of all 13 individuals was a testament to the collaborative efforts of the international community and the tireless work of the rescue teams. The U.S. military’s assistance underscores the commitment of the United States to supporting its allies and partners in times of need, regardless of the complexity or danger involved in the mission. As the situation has been resolved, the U.S. military is now returning its assets and personnel to their respective units, while continuing to stand by to offer support should it be requested in the future.
