The United States has condemned China’s recent threats towards advocates of Taiwan independence, labeling them as “irresponsible and reprehensible.” This reaction follows China’s announcement of a new initiative encouraging citizens to report individuals supporting Taiwan’s independence.
A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department stated that China’s actions are part of an ongoing intimidation campaign against Taiwan and its allies. The U.S. believes these threats undermine free speech, destabilize the Indo-Pacific region, and erode the cross-strait status quo.
The U.S. has consistently maintained a policy of “strategic ambiguity” regarding Taiwan’s independence. While not explicitly supporting it, the U.S. also does not recognize China’s sovereignty over the island. The U.S. is committed to Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities under the Taiwan Relations Act.
China views Taiwan as a renegade province that must be reunified with the mainland, by force if necessary. Any moves towards independence are seen as a direct challenge to China’s sovereignty and trigger strong responses from Beijing.
Taiwan’s government has also condemned China’s threats, calling them interference in its internal affairs and a reminder for Taiwan to remain vigilant.
