Adm. Samuel J. Paparo, commander of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and Villanova alum, addressed the 2025 graduating class in a commencement speech at Villanova University.

Returning to his alma mater, Paparo spoke to the graduates on how the virtues learned at Villanova impacted a life and career of service.

“The world needs leaders who don’t shy away,” said Paparo. “The future will be shaped by those who have the courage to engage difficult questions and the wisdom to build bridges of understanding. Your generation has both the capacity and responsibility to move the nation forward.”

During the commencement ceremony, Paparo was awarded an honorary Doctor of Military Science degree to recognize his exceptional contributions to the field of military science and his years of military service.

“When I graduated from these halls in 1987, I understood that my diploma wasn’t just a credential—it was a commitment to something larger than myself,” said Paparo. “Through your Villanova education, you’ve gained powerful tools for leadership and service. Now it’s your turn to pass these gifts on to others.”

Paparo also spoke at the Villanova Naval Reserves Officer Training Corps commissioning ceremony during his visit to the university. Villanova hosts Army, Naval, and Air Force ROTC midshipmen and cadets and is strongly connected with the heritage of the U.S. military, as the Navy and Marine Corps were founded in Philadelphia in 1775. These newly commissioned officers are the future leaders of the U.S. military and enter the Fleet at a critical juncture, where their service will contribute to the prosperity and defense of the nation.
